Global Communities under US Agency for International Aid (USAID) EMIRGE program has continued supporting counties in Kenya to develop better legal framework which is necessary for the growth and development of co-operative sectors in the counties.

March 1st to 3rd ,2017, Siaya County Government convened a workshop where EMIRGE Co-operative Specialists supported the county’s Trade and Co-operative Officers to develop Act, Policy and Regulations document that when implemented, will steer the growth of the sector. The workshop involved tailoring the Model County Co-operative Law to best address the unique needs of co-operative sector in Siaya. The county (like many other counties) has been relying on the CAP 490 which has fundamental limitations given that the co-operative sector was devolved.

“Having a cooperative legislation will stimulate the growth of cooperative sector in the county. My county government thanks Global Communities for stepping in to fill this important gap.” Said   Siaya County Governor Rasanga when Global Communities team paid a courtesy call on him at the county’s Head quarter.

Global Communities has so far supported three other counties-Makueni, Machakos and Kajiado to develop their own cooperative laws.
